I made a little guitar synth patch using the ZeroCross node as a pitch tracker. There's one trick which I think helped a bit: I wired the ZeroCross's output back into a filter's cutoff frequency. Since the filter has a high resonance peak, this little feedback loop locks onto the right pitch, filtering out harmonics. Here's what the pitch tracker sub-patch looks like:
